Development of a mixed reality system for upper limb rehabilitation

Abstract

Upper-limb rehabilitation is fundamental for restoring functional autonomy after neurological or musculoskeletal impairments. In this work, we present PhoeniXR, a Mixed Reality (MR) ecosystem dedicated to this therapeutic field using Meta Quest 3 and hand tracking. It features three cognitive-motor exercises: Ball Sorting, Card Sorting, and Cube Stacking. Interaction data are serialized into JSON files and processed via a therapist-oriented web platform. This platform automates performance visualization and produces structured PDF clinical reports. A remote therapist-control prototype further allows real-time session supervision. Validation with 18 participants confirmed technical feasibility, successful system integration, and positive user engagement, highlighting the potential of PhoeniXR as a mixed reality platform for upper-limb rehabilitation.
